Cost of Studying in the Czech Republic

Cost of Studying in the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic attracts students from around the planet to its prestigious institutions and world-renowned programs. The country has found popularity in the eyes of international students for many reasons, not least of which is its low cost of study.

But what exactly should students traveling to the country expect to spend on their degrees? This all depends on a variety of factors. Here are three you should consider:

Which Language Will You Study In?

The Czech Republic is a popular student destination for many reasons [link to Why Study in Czech Republic], not least of which is its education institutions’ dedication to providing education in an array of languages. The most popular foreign language is, probably not surprisingly, English.

For foreign students looking to study in the Czech Republic who know the local Czech language, we have terrific news for you: your education, should you choose to attend a public university or institution, will be completely free of charge! By law, if courses are taught and taken in native Czech, they are tuition-free.

However, most students traveling to the country are looking to take their courses and earn their degrees in English, or perhaps some other widely-spoken language. If this is the case, you are in the majority and will be subject to general tuition fees; however, these are still very low compared to much of Europe, Australia, and the US. Beginning at a price of only approximately 2000 EUR each year, students can enroll and earn their degrees at a highly respected, widely recognized Czech university.

Private or Public University?

Another factor for students to consider is their enrollment in a public or private institution. With almost 70 universities, colleges, and institutes, the Czech Republic provides prospective students with an array of options. Offering programs in 26 public universities, 39 private universities, and 2 state higher education institutes, the Czech Republic offers education to foreign students at varying, but always low, prices.

At a public university, tuition will depend on whether or not you speak the native Czech language (see above) and the field you choose to study (see below). For non-native Czech speakers, tuition will likely fall between 2000 EUR to 3000 EUR at one of these schools.

Private institutions differ slightly. The range of their tuition fees is dramatically larger, beginning at 2000 EUR and reaching up to 15,000 EUR annually. However, they tend to be based only on the field of study a student engages in, in addition, of course, to the overall university fees, which may vary from school to school.

What Field Will You Study?

As is the case in most countries and educational systems, the tuition fees at Czech universities largely depend upon the field of study a student opts to pursue. While those enrolled in public institutions will likely not see a significant difference between the price they pay for programs such as economics or humanities and medicine or dentistry, those enrolled at private universities face a different situation, entirely.

Students enrolled in Bachelor’s degrees in fields such as humanities, arts, and economics at a private institution should expect lower tuition fees closer to a 2000 EUR annual price tag. However, for fields of medicine, science, dentistry, and others, the price might jump to as high as 14,000 EUR, each year. While this is certainly a higher fee in the Czech Republic, it still falls far below top destinations like the US, Australia, and even many neighboring European countries.
